Establishing a skincare routine that works for your skin type is difficult enough - and now we’re dealing with maskne! We’re all about making skincare a little easier, so we’ve selected some products best suited for a few major skin types: dry skin, oily skin, combination and sensitive skin.
The Best Cleansers For...
Look for cleansers with lots of plant butters and oils if you experience dry, itchy or flaky skin. If your skin feels tight after you cleanse, you most likely have dry skin...and might need to switch up your cleanser too! You’ll need something that restores moisture but also helps to lock it in, like jojoba oil. Avoid cleansers with stripping and drying ingredients like ethanol and isopropyl alcohol.
Jane Scrivner Cleansing Balm
Blends organic jojoba oil, beeswax, nine essential oils like lemongrass, sandalwood and sweet orange oil which promotes collagen and elastin production and helps to mimic skin’s natural oil production. This luxurious balm to oil melts away makeup and dirt while leaving skin nourished.
Using an oil cleanser on oily skin might seem counter productive, but in fact, oil based cleansers help balance oil production and are great for oily skin - and all skin types really! Oil cleansers also allow for a deeper cleanse because the molecules are smaller than those in cream or gel based cleansers and will penetrate deeper into your skin.
Little Barn Blue Yarrow + Geranium Cleansing Oil Deep cleansing, but also balancing! This cleansing oil includes geranium to balance oil production and even out skin tone, but also has blue yarrow which works as a natural antiseptic to keep skin clear of unwanted bacteria.
Ilera Detoxifying Clay Deep Cleanser Clay is a great ingredient for oily skin because it helps absorb excess oil. Also packed with antioxidants, vitamin E, and turmeric which reduces inflammation and keeps skin bright.
Combination skin types are a blend of dry and oily. Typically combo skin gets oily in the T-zone area (forehead, nose + chin) while the periphery can be dry, itchy, and flakey. Look for a balancing cleanser that won’t strip your skin and that helps keep your pH stable.
Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash A concentrated gel based cleanser that keeps skin clear from build up and excess oil with a gentle AHA, but also keeps the skin’s pH balance intact. Aloe, rice seed and coconut derived surfactants provide hydration the skin needs!
If your skin is sensitive and easily irritated, look for cleansers without harsh ingredients that might strip your skin and avoid synthetic fragrances and essential oils that could cause redness and irritation.
Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser Packed with antioxidants to protect delicate skin, this gel based cleanser is effective enough to wipe away makeup but gentle enough to leave on for five minutes as an exfoliating mask. Made with lycopene (aka tomato extract!) and strawberry seed oil, this cleanser will brighten and even out skin tone without stripping your skin of the oils it thrives off of!
The Best Moisturizers For…
Dry skin, especially in dry months, can be such a pain. A few ingredients that helps nourish and hydrate dry skin are hyaluronic acid, allantoin, rose hip and colloidal oatmeal. Sometimes, dry skin can get red and irritated, so look for soothing ingredients to relieve redness + irritation. Avoid ingredients like ethanol and isopropyl alcohol that often dehydrate skin.
LXMI Nilotica Melt This miracle balm to oil has only one ingredient, Nilotica. If you haven’t heard the buzz about Nilotica, let us fill you in. Ethically sourced by the Nile River, Nilotica reserve is the ultra-hydrating cousin of the shea nut.
Fatty acids help skin produce its natural oil barrier, allantoin promotes cell turnover, and vitamin A stimulates collagen and elastin production which in turn keeps skin plump, hydrated and minimizes the appearance of fine lines.
Use this balm as a treatment for extremely dry patches after cleansing, before going to sleep.
Those with oily skin tend to have more active sebaceous (aka oil) glands which could lead to more breakouts. Products with antibacterial properties help keep skin clear while ingredients like niacinamide helps minimize the appearance of pores and strengthens the outermost layer of skin.
Jane Scrivner Over Oil "OO" Cream The “OO” cream is great for oily skin because it’s lightweight and won’t feel too rich on your skin. While it does combat dry flaky skin, it also mattifies oil on your face and sealing in moisture by forming a fine lay over top of your skin to protect it from trans epidermal water loss. Colloidal oatmeal also strengthens the outermost layer of your skin while white birch bark extract helps keep skin clear from breakouts.
Sans Ceuticals Cellular Repair Cream This moisturizer not only restores skin cells, it also balances pH production! With 5% niacinamide (aka Vitamin B5), shea butter, baobab seed oil, Vitamin E and fatty acids, you’ll also notice a reduction in inflammation, redness, sun damage and acne. This moisturizer also stimulates collagen production, which in turn, keeps skin plump and firm.
Combo skin can be a tough nut to crack...if you don’t know what to look for! Keep your eyes for nourishing ingredients that won’t strip your skin like colloidal oatmeal to help protect from trans epidermal water loss, vitamin C to keep skin tone even, and antioxidants that help shield skin from outside stressors.
Jane Scrivner Over Oil "OO" Cream Go figure, a moisturizer that keeps skin hydrated but also has the ability to mattify oil. The “OO” cream is great for a variety of different skin types; not only does it lock in moisture but it also reduces shine. The perfect combo for combination skin.
Ursa Major Recovery Cream Rich, yet lightweight moisturizer that will zap flaky dry skin but won’t weigh skin down with excess oil. Apply AM or PM as a way to hydrate skin, reduce redness, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Packed with fatty acids, vitamins A, C + E, and antioxidants that protect skin from the elements.
Ingredients to look for if you have sensitive skin are ones that soothe and calm like shea butter, Vitamin E and chamomile. Steer clear of ingredients that could be irritating to your skin such as synthetic fragrance, essential oils and harsh alcohols like ethanol or isopropyl alcohol which can be extremely drying.
Sans Ceutials Cellular Repair Cream Perfect for sensitive skin, this restorative, lightweight moisturizer gently repairs the damaged DNA of cells.
